Licensed Contractors

The State of Texas does NOT license General Contractors (GC).  The only licensed construction trades in Texas are plumbers, electricians, and HVAC technicians.

The Texas Residential Construction Commission (TRCC) was created in 2003 “under the auspice that it was to aid consumers with complaints against builders”.  “The TRC established specific state-wide performance standards …[and] put in place a mandatory dispute resolution procedure for construction defect claims. “  Under the TRCC a builder or remodeler could become a registered contractor.

However, “the 2009 legislative session lawmakers in Austin failed to support continuation of the TRCC.”  The TRCC was closed on August 31, 2010.

In fact, the State of Texas has NEVER had licensed General Contractors.  If someone is advertising themselves as being a licensed GC or are using a TRCC builder registration number, please beware.  Please refer to the link below which explains the Texas Residential Construction Commission in more detail.  The quotes above are from that web page.
